Deathnir - Album Review: Second Sin

09 Jul 2018 // A review by Kerry MB

Deathnir (pronounced Death Near) are a four-piece thrash outfit from Hamilton and have recently released their long awaited second release, Second Sin.

For anyone familiar with Deathnir's sound, you’d know that their musical influences are everything that is good in the world of metal; Megadeth, Metallica, Judas Priest etc, and while you might be thinking that anyone who tries their hand at thrash metal might just be ripping off said artists, a carbon copy of noise, well your kind of wrong.

Yes, you can hear those excellent influences, but the way Deathnir execute each riff, drum kick, bass line and vocal style, it's all their own and done so flawlessly.

Maybe it's their young years, but Deathnir remind me a lot of former American heavy metal band, Black Tide (although plenty would disagree I’m sure) a somewhat hidden gem that once uncovered relinquishes this absolute beast of great music that otherwise could have gone unnoticed in the wrong hands. Either way, Deathnir are masters of their genre and the ten tracks ofSecond Sin are worthy of more than just a handful of second and third listens; this is a great album.

To some, the beauty of Thrash is the technicality involved, a sure-fire way to separate the amateurs from the kings. Sure, its impressive how fast you can shred, but if every other component doesn’t gel alongside, especially vocally, then it can throw the listener off, a lot. Fortunately, Deathnir seem to be old hands at their tight musicianship and every nuance just rolls the way its intended and sounds like a hell of a lot of fun too.

I love the diversity of each song, Epitome of Darkness is a definite stand out with its deep foreboding, crunchy riffs and change in tempo. There is a nice mix of melody throughout Second Sin and I can imagine just how well they would execute this live too.

If you’re looking for a bit more Thrash in your collection, look no further than Deathnir. Second Sin is an album worth shouting about and I see a long future ahead for these guys, well done.

About Deathnir

Deathnir was originally formed in 2013 with members Drew Carter, Adam Johnson, Rey Benher and Andrew Wild. The inspiration that began Deathnir was a fascination with viking culture and mythlogy, as well as a love for 80's thrash metal. Deathnir competed in their first battle of the bands competition within months of its creation and ranked as semi-finalists. Shortly afterwards the first Deathnir EP was released.

Wild left the band in early 2014 and Matt Mooney was recruited as his replacement. Benher left shortly afterwards. Since then the band has performed across their nation and were awarded the 'passionate performance award' in the National Battle of the Bands Championship in 2014.

During 2015 Deathnir recorded and released their debut LP titled Die By The Axe, during which Mooney departed. The drums on the album were tracked by session musician Tom Meslager. Shortly after the release of DBTA the band was joined by Luke Elliot on drums and Brad Ion on lead guitar. Carter briefly held a position as a TV presenter for a music show called Zee Rock and the group started getting their music videos aired on television. Deathnir toured the DBTA album during the infamous 2016 September Onslaught Tour and released their second LP Second Sin on May 25th 2018.

Shady Brain Farm - Album Review: ..Another Set Of Circumstances
26 Sep 2024 // by Kerry MB
Shady Brain Farm hail from North-West Auckland — specifically Kumeu, Waimauku, and Muriwai Beach — and has been making music together since 1997. The band, Ben Furniss lead vocals, guitar, and keyboards, Paul Taylor drums and backing vocals, and Chris Vaughan on bass and backing vocals are certainly no strangers to musical diversity and are back with a new album, ...

Hadees Drudge is quite an anomaly in Wellington’s metal scene. Forgoing a second guitarist, they proudly rock one guitar in a genre where that’s almost unheard of.

PARK RD - Album Review The Novel
23 May 2024 // by Kerry MB
It’s easy to see why Auckland five-piece, PARK RD is making some noise, figuratively and literally with their debut album, The Novel. Heavy on the indie, but far from light with solid guitar riffs and pop and funk sensibilities, PARK RD are a great example of solid musicianship.
