Michael Morris - Album Review: Slow Loris

26 Jul 2018 // A review by darryl baser

Former Dunedin musician Michael Morris has recently moved to Paris, France. He’s always had a talent for the theatrical and flamboyant.

His debut album Slow Loris encapsulates this well, along with a cheeky sense of humour which is evident from the first song The Morning, which begins with gentle and beautiful bird song, turns rocky, and cadences as he sings “I fucking hate the mornings”.

The word ‘unique’ is an over-used cliché, but when writing about Michael Morris’ work it's actually true. You can hear a wide range of influences, but his style is 100% his own.

Morris has produced the 6-track-album himself, playing everything, and his expertise with guitar is obvious, especially on the more progressive rock styled numbers including the album’s closing track Not Space Nor Time.

The album’s second track Cobweb Head fully commits to the quiet/loud philosophy beginning with just Morris’ voice and acoustic guitar fingerpicked plucked tenderly as Morris softly sings, then at 47 seconds in all hell breaks loose, pre-chorus and chorus hit with rock drums high gain guitars and Morris using his best and biggest rock voice.

Landslide is the first single released from Slow Loris, and at under 4 minutes it stands out on the record. It’s also slightly less embellished than the others, fitting more of a pop format.

While not delving into self-parody or comedy songs, Slow Loris doesn’t take its self too seriously. There’s a lightness about the whole record.

Rabbit Hole is another of the album’s singles, and it shows off Michael Morris’ virtuosity, and has him delving into late 60's, early 70's psychedelia.

Slow Loris is an excellent, albeit short, LP and highly recommended for anyone wanting to discover a talented quirky, yes accessible songwriter.

It’s got to be one of the strongest debut releases in recent years.

Nika - Single Review: Saviour Complex
03 Nov 2022 // by darryl baser
A song with an interesting title will always grab my attention, and the idea of people with a saviour complex has always fascinated me, so when the new song by Nika called Saviour Complex was offered to me to review I almost somersaulted. The song opens with a gently and alluring piano melody before Nika’s voice kicks in and from the first notes some vocal training is obvious.

Veronika Bell, known to music fans as Vikae, has been composing and producing music for a good few years, and is gaining some crossover traction between the dance and pop worlds. While she writes many of her tunes on a piano, and can perform them beautifully with piano and her impressive voice, it is the dance-styled pop versions of her tune which have been garnering her acclaim.
