Captain Festus McBoyle's Travellin' Variety Show - Captain Festus McBoyle and His Motley Crew - Single Review: The Little Things

25 Aug 2018 // A review by Shade

I first came across Captain Festus McBoyle when he appeared on a television show performing a track Cheeky Little Monkey. Having enjoyed that track immensely, I had a little hunt and came across many other tracks from this hugely talented man. Since then he has released two pirate themed albums and this is his newest song, titled The Little Things.

The Little Things is a feel-good ditty that really is a magical song. Musically it has his traditional pirate sound and lyrically it’s one of those songs that will stick in your mind. It has a message that is needed now more than ever. The Little Things reminds us how we need to look back and take stock of the things that count and matter and more often than not they are the little things.

Captain Festus McBoyle is the full package in the sense that he dresses as a pirate and travels the country entertaining children and adults wherever he goes. He is what you would describe as an old school artist with his songs being stories with plenty of humour that will keep you giggling and smiling. I would encourage you to hunt down his previous albums and get along to one of his shows you’re never too old to be enthralled by a master entertainer.

About Captain Festus McBoyle's Travellin' Variety Show

A Vaudeville musical comedy Troupe from Auckland who are regularly compared to Monty Python and Spike Milligan. They target unsuspecting families with utmost precision, and transcend age and culture with ease.

This lot are more fun than a squirrel up ya jumper. Award nominations for both their music and their videos, current semi finalists in the International Songwriting Competition and recent NZ on Air grant recipients, they regularly perform all over NZ and parts of Australia. A unique and dynamic experience for the whole family. Masters of Mischief and Mayhem and simply an act not to be missed.

They've played everything from WOMAD to Splore to Cubadupa to sell out shows at Nelson Arts Festival to Town Hall shows with the entire Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra.

Maggie Cocco's Science for Sociopaths - Gig Review: Maggie Cocco @ Lopdell Theatre, Tititrangi - 22/11/2023
27 Nov 2023 // by Shade
Whatever came out of the pandemic, it stranded some amazing talent here long enough for them to enrich our musical world. Down into the Lopdell labyrinth, a buzz of age-spanning expectancy waited for two of these: Maggie Cocco and her accompanist for the tour Bonnie Schwarz who would add much more than just ‘sad cello’ to tonight’s epic cycle of piano songs.

Eve Kelly @ Jam Factory, Tauranga - 03/03/2023

The ‘Sold Out’ sign is a good sign and it went up several days before Eve Kelly’s first show at The Jam Factory in Tauranga’s Historic Village. Whakatane-based Eve Kelly is a star on-the-rise and she put on a show that left her audience, old and new, elated and begging for more.

Coridian - Single Review: Seed II
21 Oct 2020 // by Shade
There's an implicit line in Rock music between the head-banging craze that makes you want to raid the mosh pit, and the refined preciseness of a subtle yet powerful tune. Very few bands can master both.
