Coming out of the already fantastically robust music scene of Dunedin, Mitch James has released yet another single ahead of his debut album. Titled Old News the song is a heartfelt statement to one you care for, but one you have wronged and one that is leaving; a sentiment that many can relate to. James lays his thoughts open, weaving a story of duality; on one side his regrets for past lies and mistakes, on the other his deep-rooted remaining feelings.
The song covers a narrative that has been covered many a time in music and for good reason, it's a passionate story that listeners can relate to but where the magic happens in this archetypal story is how the artist can convey their particular sincerity and insights into the situation. Lyrically, James paints this picture with words of sentiment: waiting for watches to stop ticking, door keys given and leads on to a fantastic hook pleading to be released of the thoughts of this person.
In terms of production, I feel that this is a step back from his breakout track No Fixed Abode. The current climate in the singer-songwriter genre is steadily on the path of well-polished instruments and even sounding vocals, something that James avoided in the style of his first single. He could've gone for a more indie vibe on this track but instead opting for more varied instrumentation and a cleaner, more well produced sound typical of pop.
But that's not to say the track is detracted by this change of pace, the song is still a well-rounded tune with a catchy hook that touches on a shared experience with the listener in a beautiful way. Ultimately, this gives me great anticipation to hear how his journey from rock bottom to chart topper is played out.
