If you’re involved in any way in the rock scene of Auckland, it’s likely you’ll have heard the name Fire For Glory. If you haven’t yet, well, tune in anyway: This pop-punk group has been kicking around Auckland for over half a decade now, and currently consists of Josh on the mic, Brian on bass guitar, Shay on the kit, plus Cam and Elijah on the six-strings. They pride themselves on putting on fun, high-energy gigs, and their recorded tunes are no less so. What does their new single Stray Dogs have to offer?

With a song length at just under three minutes, you know this is going to punk number. In an upbeat major key, set to a hopping rhythm courtesy of the bass and drums, you find yourself slipping into that weekend mood. The clean vocals take up the front of the mix and make your ears stand at attention, especially when the bass and drums momentarily hold back in the verses.

The chorus is basically one big, entertaining hook; when propped up with backing vocals, Josh’s main melody becomes even more singalong-able, while the pumping, open-string guitar strums make you rock to the beat or just hop around like you’re 18 at a house party. This song was created to be played live, just like many of Fire For Glory’s tunes.

Partly introspective, the lyrics celebrate friendships among unlikely pals, the bond between even the runtiest of mutts, making you want to raise your pint glass with an arm around your newest best friend and sing the chorus aloud.

The band are never shy to let their metalcore roots show, as a lot of modern pop-punk bands also do. Shay shifts the drumming tempo to half-time, Cam and Elijah’s guitar strums are swapped for a few chunky palm-muted chugs, and the clean vocals ratcheted up to screams. A slick little guitar solo is whipped up, before one more chorus and another crunchy breakdown is served as the finale.

These local lads have another classic to add to their stage repertoire, guaranteed to satisfy fans, and give punters at bars something to shake a beer to.
