If you’re feeling reminiscent of the times you let your Joy Division and New Order records be the only thing in your rotation, just wishing there were more great post-punk bands in your life then look no further. Of course, if you’re as big of a fan you’ve probably already heard of Deaf. A 5-piece band from Wellington who recently opened for the 40-year reunion tour of Bauhaus with Peter Murphy and David J.
This EP eases you in with some ambient successions. Welcomed by the atmospheric like bass lines and synth of Perfect Blue, which brings us into the second song on the EP, Shards. Shards was released as a single earlier this year along with Truancy.
This band doesn’t feel brand new to me. If someone were to play this EP in passing and tell me they were a more unknown band from the original peak of post-punk in the 70’s/80’s I would believe it. Deaf successfully bring this homage to the original emo greats into 2018 with a sound they mould perfectly in to. Their image is solidified by black and white photography and I have to note towards the name Deaf being a great name for a band in general. This band’s journey of greatness is only just beginning.
We are delivered into the final two songs of the EP, Slav Defence and Dead End which build you up for the packed punches, ringing guitars and the thought of a live show that would go absolutely mental for these great songs.
I am a huge fan of the vocals on Dead End, and not to mention this whole EP but I will give that song special mention. There’s diversity throughout the EP but guitarist and vocalist, Luke Kavanagh, knows the sound he wants to bring to every song.
I wholeheartedly look forward to hearing more from this band and only hope I can catch them live sometime very soon. You can catch Deaf at one of Eyegums' free Wednesday shows at San Fran on the 21st of November. Their new self-titled EP is available for purchase and to stream on Bandcamp and Soundcloud.
