Float Out is about the process of letting things go, moving forward, learning from your past experiences, growing as a result. As such, the track has an intrinsically emotional weight to it. Vocally speaking, This Pale Fire's singer-songwriter Corban Koschak, has a similar style to that of Coldplay's Chris Martin; with silky falsettos and some reasonably deep lows.
With some simple guitar strumming and trickling keys, the vocal component is the focal point, and is comforting to the ear. Gradually building throughout the track, with some gorgeous harmonies in the chorus, Float Out actually feels too short. Cut short, as if ending only a third of the way through the track, the ending is abrupt and uncalled for. Leave the people wanting more, but this walks the line of not giving enough in the first place.
Otherwise, well balanced and clean, Float Out keeps in the rawness of the track with the naturally expected string noise which complements the grain of his voice oh so well. It runs at a reasonably upbeat pace, but still makes you want to just close your eyes and contemplate your decisions in life. Suitable, considering the lyrical content.
This Pale Fire is the musical alias of Auckland based singer/songwriter Corban Koschak.
Writing by himself, exploring the folk idiom and dabbling in other genres, he had become used to working in isolation.
“My friend Karl heard my songs and encouraged me to take them into the studio.”
