Dan Sharp - EP Review: Slack Tide
After releasing two stunning singles, Satellites and Have To Change, Dan Sharp has finally released his five-track EP Slack Tide. I had the honour of reviewing his two single releases prior to this, and as good fortune would have it, I now get to review the entire EP.
Five songs is a bit of a tease, however what Dan has done is pack so much emotion and soul into each track that 5 is almost fulfilling. I say almost because after hearing his well-crafted EP, the world will surely want a full length album to follow.
Slack Tide is like a snap shot into Dan's life, it has a personal feel representing “the delicate balance between comfort and the struggles he has faced”. From the bluesy introduction of Tiny Ruins through to the emotionally charged and confronting Have To Change, this EP is delightfully soulful.
Dan's gravelly vocals deliver genuine lyrics which are accompanied by solid guitar playing. The whole package is indeed “world class” and an achievement of which Dan Sharp can be proud. I also want to make a mention of the video accompanying Have To Change, directed by Corbie Films the emotion of the track is captured perfectly, it is an intense well directed visual representation of the song.
Each one of the five songs are captivating, with Satellites being my personal standout. Beautiful composition, radiating warmth in tone. Genuine bitter-sweet storytelling.
Slack Tide is a mesmerizing journey, touched by a range of different influences. Recommended listening.

His soulful songwriting and lyrics are the foundation on which his rich, gritty vocals and guitar thrive.
With musical inspiration that ranges from early guitar-blues through to more modernly produced soul, pop and folk, Dan's sound and style of writing is well rounded, mature and thoughtful. His early work reached the ears of acclaimed NZ songwriter and producer, Thomas Oliver, who has produced Dan's upcoming EP.
