After the success of their debut track Jobim, which was picked up by a number of radio stations around the country; electronic explorers Beacon Bloom return with a brand-new production, presented via a live recording and accompanying video that was captured during their sell out launch show in November last year.
The proclaimed track that spawned Beacon Bloom into existence, aptly titled Materia, features an array of lush synthesiser arpeggios, layered drums, atmospheric guitar work, and a reverb soaked vocal hook, combined and arranged to create an emotively upbeat, and promisingly expansive track; perfectly showcasing what one can expect from a Beacon Bloom live performance and future studio releases.
You can hear and see from the recording that the musical effects translate well to the audience, propped up by the subtle use of additional visual stimuli. It would have been nice to see a bit more camera coverage of the crowd’s responses, along with a more dynamic light show, further enhancing the track considering its instrumental nature. However, this is of minimal concern given that the performance was being filmed and has real potential to be developed for future shows where a larger scale VJ type experience would add even more impact.
Overall, Materia is a fantastically groovy and danceable track worthy of a studio release, and an additional single has also been hinted at for release later in the year.
Beacon Bloom is the musical outlet of New Zealand native Ryan Ferris.
Ryan has spent the last 5 years in 22 countries as a musical nomad, following the sun, writing and performing in the opposite seasons of Australasia and Europe.
Midnights in Berlin, hazy sunburn in Mallorca and Lisbon, the effervescent hum of Prague and Sydney and the sleepy stillness of hometown Christchurch have all collided and culminated in his latest body of work - a bedrock of groove and punchy bass; layered and soaring vocals cresting over wavey analog synths. Electronica carved from pop, chillwave, space disco, neo soul and funk.
