Glow Becky - Single/Video Review: Stand Up

06 Mar 2019 // A review by Corinne Rutherford

A five-piece alternative rock band from Auckland originally named after an archaeological find in Turkey (with suspected evidence of extra-terrestrial interaction), have released their new single and music video Stand Up.

The now more pronounceable Glow Becky, previously Gobekli Tepe formed in late 2016 and are relative new comers to the NZ rock scene. Despite the newbie status of the band, they have already had a line-up change, released their first single Pain And Drug and become regulars on the Auckland live music scene. They have been busy developing the bands reputation and brand. Gaining a following for the “infusion of heavy rock and bright pop melodies” that Glow Becky is getting noticed for.

Stand Up has a lovely melodic rock sound, a fast paced rock ballad mingled with a hint of upbeat pop. The lyrics of this song which have been written by all members of the band convey a serious message, raising mental health awareness. Jel Sisona on vocals melodically conveys a message of hope “Stand up, lift off, pull up and soar. Fly above the great azure. We rise, we fall but I know that you can conquer all. All I ask be you.”

The music video made by Francis Wheeler which is the back drop to the single appears uncomplicated. It focuses entirely on the band performing in a colourful location surrounded by street art. Great setting for filming and nothing to distract away from the band. The video was well thought out, polished and clean, using different camera angles to create drama. It complimented the sentiment and tone of the song.

So, who are these almost new kids on the block bringing us a fresh pop rock sound?. Jel Sisona – Vocals, Karl Apao – Guitars, Eric Gomez – Guitars, Dwayne Diack – Bass and Joe Teinakore on Drums. These guys are Glow Becky and they are bringing to the table a tight cohesive sound with Stand Up. Definitely a band worth keeping an eye on.

Stand Up has been produced, recorded and mixed by Karl Apao (Soundkard Productions) and mastered by Chris Chetland (Kog Studio).

And just on a side note. Glow Becky is a sterling name for a band.

Rating: ( 4 / 5 )

About Glow Becky

Diverse, versatile, organic & dynamic – Glow Becky was formed through the instant & powerful bond experienced between the band during a random jam-session in Auckland, New Zealand, that brought them all together in 2016. Naturally finding rhythms and grooves in a wild exchange of experiences, skills & styles – their quick discovery of being able to connect & adapt to each other inspired all five players from that jam to combine their own stunning individual talents into something even greater.

Unified as Glow Becky, the band has locked-in to an ever-changing, excitingly fresh approach to their sound that encourages the freedom of expression and putting ‘the moment’ right into the music. With an impressive range of ideas & creativity fuelling their alternative kiwi rock, Glow Becky expands & evolves their songs & structures even further by infusing bright pop melodies and a heavy rock vibe. Each player in the band is committed and determined to creating music that truly speaks for itself.
