Caroline Easther and the Cinnamon Girls - Album Review: Lucky

03 Apr 2019 // A review by darryl baser

The name Caroline Easther has been in the lexicon of New Zealand’s music industry since the heady Flying Nun days when she drummed with The Chills and the Verlaines.

Now after a career behind a drum kit she’s staking a place centre stage as a songwriter with her debut album Lucky.

The song Anything For You has single written all over it; with a moderate to quick tempo and pop 101 structure.

Down slows the tempo and has a wonderful lap steel guitar frequently on the verge of feeding back. But tastefully restrained.

Your Footsteps Falling reminds me of Alex Chilton, especially the verse. But it’s the huge chorus and monster middle eight which really won me over. This is a monster song, which packs so much in to its short time. It you’re an album skimmer when deciding to buy an LP, don’t skim past this track.

Jaguar Boy has a slight country twang and almost a waltz feel, harking back to Caroline's days playing with The Warratahs. The pedal or lap steel is back adding texture.

Apart from vocalisations, like ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’, Goodbye Little Boy is completely instrumental and simply wonderful.

No Ordinary Day sounds like another definite single from the album right from the get go. There’s a wonderful brittle tremolo guitar strumming the chords on the first beat of the bar for the most part. It’s just one of the clearly defined textures in the song.

Rich textures are a feature of Lucky, along with a true sense of space. It’s not over produced, just very well produced.

Lucky comes to a close with a cover. It you’re to cover any song which might define how people think of the album, it’s good to choose one which you know will resonate with your potential audience, and Easther nails it, closing her debut solo record with a duet of Hank Williams’ I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry, sung with Warratahs’ frontman Barry Saunders.

Caroline Easther backed by her band The Cinnamon Girls (Alan Galloway, Hamish Graham and Murray Costello) are hitting the road to promote the album - don't miss out on what is sure to be an exceptional live show.

Rating: ( 4 / 5 )

About Caroline Easther and the Cinnamon Girls

Caroline Easther has always been best known for her drumming skills, and has played with The Chills, The Verlaines, The Warratahs’ Barry Saunders and Let's Planet among many, many others.

Now, she's venturing to the front of stage to front her band The Cinnamon Girls to showcase the songs from her new, debut solo album, Lucky.

Caroline is a huge fan of the indie-pop, alternative rock genre and lists bands such as The Go-Betweens, Sneaky Feelings, The Triffids and PJ Harvey as among her main influences. Her album, Lucky, would not have been made had David Long not been available to produce the sound Caroline wanted so much at his Owhiro Bay studio in Wellington. The album is essentially guitar driven but is varied in pace and in its sounds and lots of musicians popped in to add their flavour - Alan Norman, Dave Berry, Alan Galloway, Hamish Grahan, David Long and Murray Costello all contributed. The resultis a melodic, spacious, multi-layered collection of songs about the small and the not-so-small things Caroline has observed or loved or experienced...

Nika - Single Review: Saviour Complex
03 Nov 2022 // by darryl baser
A song with an interesting title will always grab my attention, and the idea of people with a saviour complex has always fascinated me, so when the new song by Nika called Saviour Complex was offered to me to review I almost somersaulted. The song opens with a gently and alluring piano melody before Nika’s voice kicks in and from the first notes some vocal training is obvious.

Veronika Bell, known to music fans as Vikae, has been composing and producing music for a good few years, and is gaining some crossover traction between the dance and pop worlds. While she writes many of her tunes on a piano, and can perform them beautifully with piano and her impressive voice, it is the dance-styled pop versions of her tune which have been garnering her acclaim.
