Zoe Jennings - EP Review: War

17 Apr 2019 // A review by Corinne Rutherford
ZO (Zoe Jennings) is a musical artist from Whangarei but she is currently based in Wellington. She has just released her first EP War. This is a small but perfectly formed offering of three indie, goth/pop sounding tracks with touches of Heather Nova and Lorde with a definite Influence from Bjork .

There is a sultry moodiness to ZO’s sound. A unique almost dark quality. Introduced as “a new artist who is about to release a collection of sincere pop songs in the form of a little EP”, there wasn’t a lot of background information I could find on this musician, but I have a feeling she is steadily carving her niche in the NZ music scene.

Having described herself as “passionate about music that makes you feel something”, ZO certainly has penned some Intense and moody lyrics when making this wee EP. To Be Loved, War and Water Baby offer a nice taster of her music.

Profoundly concentrated sound with a whisp of eeriness creeping in. Slow moving and intense but with a lovely lilting melody.

The image behind the three tracks is dusky and melancholy, but intriguingly uncomplicated.

ZO has caught my attention. If you enjoy Regina Spektor then the petite EP War just may tickle your fancy.

Rating: ( 4 / 5 )

About Zoe Jennings

Zoe Jennings, formerly known as ZÖ, is a singer-songwriter from a small coastal town in New Zealand who writes honest and emotionally charged alternative pop songs. Growing up, Zoe was a shy and sensitive kid who just loved to sing. Although singing came naturally, performing in front of others was something she had to learn to like. It wasn’t until she was 20 and in the middle of music school that she decided to release War, a modest three-track EP that showcased her powerful vocals and emotive lyricism which set the stage for the authentic and personal music she's known for.

Following the success of War, Zoe released her second EP, Do You Mind? This deeply introspective collection of songs features the lead single Origami, which landed on top Spotify playlists and helped Zoe sell out a show at the popular San Fran venue in Wellington, New Zealand.

Today, Zoe calls London home and continues to work on new music.
