Broods - Gig Review: Broods @ Auckland Town Hall, Auckland - 16/05/2019

19 May 2019 // A review by LouClementine

Broods have found international fame and success and welcoming them back to home turf was an enthusiastic crowd at the grand setting of Auckland Town Hall. Well known sister and brother duo, Georgia and Caleb Nott are Broods, and for this gig they were joined on stage by other musicians to accompany their set.

With their heartfelt electro pop music, Georgia performed with an infectious energy which brimmed over into the crowd. She was continually tirelessly dancing and singing; moving across the stage with a very polished performance, which hints at the reason why they have received so many accolades.

The band expressed that they were happy to be home and the cheers went up whenever Georgia joyfully expressed words of thanks and joy. Their set opened with the incredible track Sucker, which was accompanied by lasers going up around the venue. The crowd had started to warm up when the third track Eyes A Mess came on, which to me displayed a different side to their characteristic laid back sound, and by the time they played Free the audience were dancing across the stalls as well as up on the balcony. To be fair, some were dancing all night.

The light show added a stunning element to the performance, and the sound was outstanding. This was the first time for me at this venue; it is definitely a great place to hear live music. As a front woman Georgia held the gaze of the crowd, I adore her vocals, they have a softness and tone which reminds me of some of my favourite female singers of the last twenty years.

My favourite track performed on the night was L.A.F. It’s not easy to pigeonhole this band, they create a distinct sound and I can imagine dancing to remixes at a club or turning it up loud at the beach. The crowd were sad to see their set end, and the encore Couldn’t Believe ended the night on the perfect note.

About Broods

Meet Broods; the brother-sister duo of Georgia and Caleb Nott who hail from Nelson, and are now based in Auckland. It's been whirlwind time for the two who independently released their debut single Bridges to a heated bidding war to sign the group. Broods signed with Capitol Records in the USA, Polydor Records in the UK, and Island Australia & Universal NZ.

Georgia and Caleb started playing together around the age of ten, more recently, playing together as part of (the now defunct) Peasants. The two started spending time with Joel Little in the studio while he was also working on Lorde's Grammy nominated Pure Heroine.

Their song Bridges has clocked over 300,000 plays on Soundcloud, and Hypemachine says they are “pretty much destined for pop success”.
