At the tender age of 15, Bianca Isabel is already a formidable singer and songwriter. Watching her singing for her social media videos under a heavy mane of dark hair, it’s hard not to be reminded of Lorde; New Zealand’s sweetheart turned international artpop princess. Isabel’s voice is surprisingly mature, even in the simple presentations on her Instagram. Having already released her first single only a few months prior, it is clear that she is wasting no time in building herself a strong catalogue of material. There are already rumours of more recordings in the pipeline.
Lovely Day has seen Isabel depart from the more natural and acoustic tone set in her first single How Can A Witch?. Full of energy and drive, this pop punk anthem delivers everything you would hope from the genre. The song brings a rush of exuberance, with a cantering vocal. Disappointingly, the lyrics are hard to make out in the mix. Combined with a slightly cluttered lyrical delivery, the listener is denied access to Isabel’s thematic intentions. This truly is a pity, as Isabel’s voice makes for a beautiful centrepiece in her last single. The busy-ness of the vocal line in this song adds great energy but is somewhat unrelenting. I would love to hear another song in this style from Isabel containing some contrast for sonic relief.
Isabel’s ability to write a second song in an entirely different style is impressive. Her following are left with totally open expectations as to where she will go next, which is exciting! Lovely Day is a classic pop-punk song: snappy, up-beat, and danceable. It fits so squarely into the genre, that I can’t help but feel that it has not offered anything novel to the listener. It has certainly proven Isabel as an upcoming songwriter, and I look forward to seeing which direction she will take next.
Bianca Isabel was born and raised in Wellington, Bianca Isabel found a passion for songwriting at the age of 12, when she began writing satirical songs often based of her teachers and humorous situations. From the age of 13 her music evolved to become more meaningful as the tougher times in her life began to influence her music.
Her first single How Can A Witch? written in 2018 based of a toxic friendship and her single Lovely Day, also written in 2018, is an upbeat punk pop ballad which expresses common frustrations which people of all ages can relate to. Bianca has plans to release many more songs in the future.
