George After James - Single Review: In Your Hands (You Won’t Let Go)

25 Nov 2019 // A review by Corinne Rutherford
George After James is the project of James Fistonich. Based in Auckland, he is a guitarist and singer who just released his debut single, In Your Hands (You Won’t Let Go) along with an announcement of his self-titled EP due for release in January 2020.

His upbringing of living in central China profoundly impacted the way he sees the world, His introspective way of looking at life is reflected in his song writing, “Often feeling caught between two worlds, the theme of belonging permeates many of his lyrics”.

The musical artist who is known as George After James appears to have had a busy year including supporting artists such as Sophie Gibson and Lhasa among others.

He delivers a smooth jazzy track which highlights his talents as a vocalist and also as a guitarist. This has a chill sound evoking warm summery feelings of content. Vocals delivered on In Your Hands (You Won’t Let Go) range from rich velvety tones through to impressive falsetto highs. Lush guitar swells to an energetic finale, creating an interesting aural environment. Expressive lyrics flow softly.

Recorded at Roundhead Studios. Engineered by Paddy Hill, mixed by James Fistonich and mastered by Oliver Harmer at The Lab Studios. Guest guitar solo by Luan Meaker.

Rating: ( 4 / 5 )

About George After James

George After James is the project of James Fistonich, a singer, guitarist, songwriter currently based in Auckland. From New Zealand and born in Hamilton, he spent the first 18 years of his life in China, where his love for music began. He taught himself how to play guitar and through the years started to write his own music. While listening to his music you can enjoy soaring vocal lines, while rhythmic and melodic ideas from the guitar can also be a main feature.

The stories George After James sings about strive to be raw, recognising the heavy reality of the world around us, but despite it, at the core of the music is a message of hope. He is currently gigging around Auckland and New Zealand.
