This new single from The Wake Up is a solid pop rock/pop punk track with a fantastic chorus.
From the moment Dark Horse starts, you can tell you are about to have a rocking good time and I certainly wasn't disappointed. The Wake Up stay true to their Kiwi nature, which is something I absolutely love about New Zealand music. While influenced by many a band both overseas and in Aotearoa, it's still brilliant to hear that Kiwi sound coming through.
With a story that goes into why you shouldn't let things get you down, whether that is relationships or paying rent etc, this track makes for compelling listening. The chorus brings a truly feel good vibe to the song, making a real change from the feel of the verses. It's something that works well, and it also means that we get to hear a great and powerful pay off in the bridge.
Throughout the track, the vocals fit so well and sit balanced amongst the raucous guitars and awesome synth lines along with the tight drums and bass. Sonically, it is a lovely sounding track and it ebbs and flows, breathing with dynamics in order to make the sections I mentioned above come to life.
Absolutely, this song is a banger. The chorus is certainly something I could see a crowd getting into and singing along.
Both Drummer Caleb and Guitarist Chris met in 2015 when both local bands were going to compete on XFactor NZ, but after a short appearance on telly neither band won, and they went back home to Palmy... only for both to then bump into each other, drink a hot cuppa, record furiously, hone their skills on their instruments and take on the newly appointed singer Laura fresh from Music school, With at least a albums worth of songs already recorded, they set to release a single each upcoming month for 2019!
With a truck load of influences behind each of the 3 members in the band a few stand out in the imaginary musical venn diagram, Such as Paramore, Fall Out Boy & Pink
But don't let that hide the eclectic mix of other artists that inspired their songs along the way.
Truly songs built to remind you of that great summer time vibe, bringing a smile to your face.
