While Imperial April’s debut single was released this May, they are no strangers to the music scene. Victoria and Andy Knopp have worked on various projects over the years, including electro-pop band The Response and a handmade CD for Mother’s Day. After years as a "supporting musician lurking in the shadows", Victoria has found her feet as a front woman for their new project Imperial April.

The band announced their arrival with single and music video Peachy. The music video, recorded during our nationwide lockdown, responds with energy and innovation to the need for social distancing. Peachy is shot exclusively in the duo’s garage, making use of their table tennis table for some nostalgic imagery. Victoria's performance in the video is just the right amount of "over it" to align with the hook I just need some sunshine.

Peachy as a song is both grungy and fun. It’s built on a “foundation of fuzzy bass and fat drums.” The single boasts a distorted guitar solo and vocals reminiscent of Metric. The chorus, lamenting a need for “some sunshine" captures exactly how many Kiwis missing people and vitamin D are feeling this year.

I’m excited to see where Imperial April goes next with their music, as they’re certainly not short on ideas. Undoubtedly 2020 will be a year of new beginnings and content for the talented pair.

One band's trash is another band's treasure. Imperial April began as a way to up-cycle songs that didn’t quite fit the mould of Victoria and Andy Knopp’s electro-pop project The Response. At first just a selection of songs burnt to CD-R for a mother’s day present, the project has taken on a life of it’s own. After years as a supporting musician lurking in the shadows, Victoria has found a voice as front person. Blending catchy melodies and contemplative lyrics, Imperial April deliver guitar heavy power pop that is sure to get stuck firmly in your head.

For fans of Weezer, The Beths, The Cars, Lucy Dacus and Angel Olsen.
