Mudbelly - Album Review: MudBelly

20 May 2020 // A review by tonymcdonald

I'm glad we are on lockdown, as its time to really put my speakers to the test and turn them up loud (but not too loud, my health & safety hat is on).

MudBelly (what a great name) are fairly new, but this debut album will ensure that they are going to be well-known from now on! Although you may have heard their last incarnation as Hypnumb, this self-titled album will erase that name from your mind. Containing 8 memorable booming bass, up-tempo, toe tapping, funky blues songs, this is one album that will be on my playlist for a long time, maybe forever.

The first track On Fire, is my personal favourite with its upbeat Summer grooves. Slower songs such as Bullet are also great to chill out with and Crooked Magic has ripping filthy guitar hooks, reminiscent of The Black Keys. This is an album full of catchy, powerful and captivating songs.

Mudbelly is styled in an American Blues way with the perfect touch of Kiwi. The sexy soft blues with gritty and edgy vocals from Bex are complimented by John's deeper soulful vocals. I must also point out the information I received for this review was great and very refreshing to see; a great press kit, top quality sound files and links to all their socials.

Awesome stuff guys! And whoever recorded, mixed and mastered, hats off to you.

About Mudbelly

Mudbelly. It's a name.

We are a dirty blues band from Christchurch. If we were ever invited to define ourselves in the Oxford Dictionary: Power-rockin, ball-bustin, whisky-whackin ninjas of blues laden rock would be in our top three.

Fronted by Bex, swaggering rock banshee who won her voice in a poker game with the devil, together with Michael (guitar), Marcus (bass) and John (drums), the sound....just sounds right.

New Zealand’s very own Blink 182, Elemeno P, with support from Fruit Juice Parade and Valentina hit San Fran, on a fantastic warm Wellington evening. It was packed out; beers were flowing, and the sticky smell of the low-ceilinged venue was absolutely buzzing.
