Bridges is the indie-pop project of Christchurch-born Rachel Hamilton. Upon moving to Auckland to study music, she diversified her sound and branched out from the acoustic style she performed as a teenager. Weightless Without is the first single off Bridges' debut EP, which is set for release later in 2020.
Looking at the credits for the song, Bridges’ worked with a number of talented musicians and producers on the track, and this is also evident when listening to the song. Namely, Josh Naley (Wells*), David Waters (Being.), and Olly Harmer (The Lab Recording Studio).
Barely more than a whisper, vocals begin over a soft eerie soundscape. The lyrics are immediately potent; "this goes against everything I know. You’re all alone, but I won’t help you now".
The song quickly expands, and Bridges’ vocals hit with full force joined by atmospheric guitars. Bridges continues to paint a picture of a toxic relationship, the unhealthy imbalance of power, and her resolve to get out. She sings with determination; you can hear the strength in her voice. It’s reminiscent of Paramore at points, closer to home her voice could be likened to Holly Untitled and Tsorf.
Progressively the rhythm section builds, creating a perceived quickening pace. At its height there’s a sense of confusion, things keep changing, emulating the instability of the relationship she’s showcasing.
Along with the song, Bridges released a lyric video that she animated herself. A smoky background sets a dark mood and the shaky letters give a sense of uncertainty. The visuals are beautiful and impactful in their simplicity.
Throughout the song, it’s Bridge’s vocals that impress; her range, ability to create different textures, and express emotion through her voice. Overall an outstanding first single, signalling a standout EP to follow.
