Theia - EP Review: 99% Angel

03 Jun 2020 // A review by Gaby Ivanov-Giraldo

Theia is a vibrant songwriter, independent NZ musician and artist who has been releasing music since 2015, when her RnB-fused track Silver Second, produced by Alex Hope, first set foot on the scene. Her stellar debut, self-titled EP was released in 2017 with fervour, sweeping support by number. The Spinoff themselves coined Theia as being "an artist who is making edgy, socially-conscious and deeply catchy pop music". She has no boundaries in her creativity, and you definitely cannot box her.

In this 4 track EP, Theia discusses a few important concepts such as an aversion to misogyny and 'slut shaming', as well as discussing themes surrounding body-confidence and self-expression. She has her own way of doing things and smothers us in her confident sound. Theia classes her pop music as 'experimental', and does a great job at advocating herself, and the fun side of creating pop. You can check out some of her thoughts on music and her journey in her latest interview here.

Each song in this EP is a real pick-me-up, with lyrics that make you want to walk a straight line, head held high in self-worth. Kitty Kat, the first track, is an electropop banger full of bass; you’ll love this if you like music like that of Charli XCX. Frat Boyz is track two. It's full of fun and energy; it’s loud, produced well, and is unapologetically provocative. It’s music for dancers, artists, and your favourite squad.

The third track, 99% Angel, has a glossy, marching beat and packs a punch on modern dance pop. The lyrical theme is intriguing, and mainly, it’s exciting! Celebrity is track four, ending the EP in a gripping vocal melody and strong bassline. This one’s a real catch, and the thriller music video is available to watch here.

Artists like Theia are pop you want to know about; there’s a lot going on in this music scene, and the whole genre has re-evolved itself, with a whole lot of space for movement. The EP itself is well-produced, showcases her roots as a vocalist, and is ready for all ears. You can download or stream Theia's new EP on all major platforms now.
