Kevin Posey - Single Review: Your Shine Feat. Mazbou Q & Kirsten

11 Jun 2020 // A review by Gaby Ivanov-Giraldo
Kevin Posey is an international artist and native from Oklahoma, USA. Posey is a music producer, publisher and songwriter that has also graduated from an associates degree in Music Production from the Academy of Contemporary Music at the University of Central Oklahoma. His music contains rap, soul and Spanish verse. Posey has been living and sharing his musical journey in Aotearoa, New Zealand in recent years, having now started flourishing. Posey’s style is multi-genre and fuses melodic pop and hip-hop into a modern mesh. Posey's presence in the Auckland music scene specifically is strong; now co-hosting The Loft live jam night with fellow artist and friend Mazbou Q. Posey brings a lot of growth, heart-felt messages, and compassion in his lyrics.

Your Shine
is arriving to our ears at a time that falls perfectly into place. At a time where the world is trying to recover from a pandemic, we also see the resurgence, and evolution of the Black Lives Matter movement; a global protest in solidarity for a future of racial justice, equality and greater humanitarian presence in society.

Mixed, mastered and produced by Posey himself, this song is a real dance number. It has a beautiful rap intro by Mazbou Q, and a smooth transition into Kevin’s softer rap tone and lyrics. The beat and rhythm are complemented well by the delicate voice of Kirsten Darrell who sings: "I love your shine, now I’m not afraid to let the world know this time". It glorifies melanin skin colour, as well as black culture itself. In this track, the love of one’s history and identity is re-embraced, and it just goes to show how important it is to create music for the times. The three helped each other write and perform the song, which is now also a featured music video. Your Shine is streamable on all major platforms and it's not a track you want to miss out on!

About Kevin Posey

Kevin Posey, an Oklahoma native born November 8th, 1987. Growing up, he would listen to music in the backseat of his mum's car and realise he had the ability to separate each piece and mentally re-create the sounds in a new way. This curiosity of sound and composing developed into a deeper passion leading to an associates degree in music production from the Academy of Contemporary Music at the University of Central Oklahoma.

Posey today continues to use his knack for deconstructing music to mix and master records and produce songs not only for himself, but other upcoming artists. Posey’s musical style deeply reflects being influenced by multiple genres. Now making music that traverses planes between hip-hop and melodic pop, he infuses Spanish in his lyrics which he learned as a kid growing up on the southwest side of Oklahoma City.
