Roonie - Single Review: My Heart

22 Jun 2020 // A review by IslaMusic
Taupo born Michaela Pointon started songwriting when she was 12, and released her debut EP Human Nature in her final year of high school. In 2019 the young artist adopted the moniker Roonie, and chased her musical dreams to Auckland. The romantic adventure of moving to 'the big city' proved to be challenging, and she soon found herself feeling lost in the smoky crowds of Tamaki Makaurau. Roonie marks the beginning of a new chapter for Pointon.

My Heart
is the first in a series of singles set to be released by Roonie this year. The piece explores self-discovery and questions about love. It begins with a spacey arpeggiator and moves into a synth driven verse. The chorus opens into the hook line my heart knows, showcasing exciting production and epic backing vocals.

My Heart is a fun indie pop track sure to make an appearance on radio stations and in K Road bars before long. Roonie’s songwriting is charming, and her powerful vocals allow for an effective pop track. This catchy single comes with a smokey and colourful music video featuring a compelling performance from the artist.

Roonie is an up and coming artist worth keeping an eye out for— I’m excited to see what her next few singles bring.

Rating: ( 4 / 5 )

About Roonie

New Pop artist Roonie, previously known as Michaela Pointon, is making lead-way with her electrifying writing about loneliness and love. She moved to Auckland in 2019 where she is studying, writing new songs and building a name for herself in the music scene. While experiencing this huge year of growth in her music, Roonie also found herself deeply lost in heartbreak.

Her new single My Heart out out on June 19th 2020 is about self-discovery and learning to grow when you’re lost and alone. This song is electric with colour is strong yet vulnerably honest and self-reflective.

I was dubious at the thought of reviewing a Christmas album. It’s not often that modern holiday tracks dodge the danger of cheesy cheer and forced rhyme.
