Laura-mae - Single Review: Rug of Numbers

06 Aug 2020 // A review by madeleinehoward
Following the release of her debut single Betsy, Indie Pop Singer-Songwriter Laura-mae has returned with her second single Rug of Numbers.

The Golden Bay native has competed in the famous Smokefree Rockquest and made it to the boot camp round of The New Zealand X Factor during its second season. After taking a break from music to study, Laura-mae is now emerging into the New Zealand music scene with a fresh, easy listening singer-songwriter sound.

Rug of Numbers is a slow burning track, which touches on the subject of being "just another number" to a person. Laura-mae’s smooth, velvety vocals are layered over a simple chord progression. The track starts off with sparse instrumentation which gradually builds over the course of the song's 3 and a half minute duration, reaching its climax in the final chorus with Laura-mae's soaring vocals etching the melody into listener's heads.

Laura-mae is a clever lyric writer, drawing inspiration from Stevie Nicks and John Lennon. Her words paint a vivid picture. The stand out line in this single is the main hook - "Take my heart and fix it or break my heart and sweep it under your rug of numbers."

Laura-mae has been working hard behind the scenes and it's paying off. Expect to hear one more single from this new artist before the year is out.

About Laura-mae

Hailing from the beach haven of Golden Bay, singer/songwriter Laura-Mae stays true to her relaxed and upbeat vibe. This NZ musician began guitar and singing lessons at age 12, as well as strengthening her performance style through acting classes and nation-wide Country Music awards. She was a finalist in Smokefree Rockquest competing against Anna Robinson and Livvy Nott. Fresh out of high school, Laura-mae took a 5-year break from her musical career to study Marketing and Management at Victoria University of Wellington. When given the opportunity to be lead vocalist for a local covers band, Laura-Mae jumped right back into her singing and took advantage of NZ’s most creative city.

This indie-pop songwriter has performed original songs on National TV (Maori TV), sung at Wellington’s annual festival Gardens Magic plus, competed up to bootcamp round in xFactor NZ in the top 23 NZ female singer category alongside Mae Valley and Paige. Her most recent 2019/2020 Summer tour from the top-of-the-south and across the North Island, helped strengthen fan loyalty and reach the 1k follower mark on Facebook.

Laura-Mae draws lyrical inspiration from John Lennon and Stevie Nicks whilst structuring the rhythmic guitar pattern to that of Ziggy Alberts or Mumford and Sons. This rising singer has proven herself 2020’s upcoming NZ musician to watch, with new single releases scheduled throughout the year.
