Gaslight (or rather Gaslighting) has become a bit of a buzz word recently and sits perfectly as the title for this short sharp shock of fuzzed up punk from Auckland three piece Coffin Club.
Unlike a real Gaslight, this song is no slow burner. You can feel the electricity searing through this tune as guitars cut through a nursery rhyme like rhythm and melody that doesn’t sweep or soar or ebb and flow but instead fires a direct blast of energy from it’s opening chords.
Its glow is bright but short lived as verse, chorus, verse shouty chorus repeat then crash to a grinding halt. It’s that moment at a party that has just started to kick in as the fun police arrive and abruptly turn the lights back on, it leaves you wanting more and is over all too soon.
Is that clever? Is it cool? Yes, Coffin Club have that Uber cool, Mint Chicks/Die! Die! Die! Schick nailed and are young and interesting enough for you to be excited about if they stick around long enough to make some true classic NZ punk.
Let’s hope they do.
