Lady Larisa - Single Review: Four Walls

27 Nov 2020 // A review by Corinne Rutherford
Aotearoa born jazz artist and songwriter Lady Larisa has just released Four Walls, her latest single from the yet to be released up and coming debut EP Honeychild. Currently based in Hawkes Bay, Lady Larissa has learned a lot from her time in LA, New Orleans and New York. Previously opening for Michael Buble at his only New Zealand concert.

What struck me instantly was her mellow soothing tone and the immediate transportation back in time to sultry jazz clubs. This track has been described as "old school jazz meets 60's sass".

The band which backs Lady Larisa’s luscious vocals, are an incredible mix of New Zealand’s finest talent, providing a full jazz band sound complete with Barrett Hocking (The Black Seeds) - trumpet, Johnny Lawrence (Thomas Oliver, Hollie Smith, Rob Ruha, Louis Baker) - Double Bass, Ed Zuccollo (Trinity Roots, Hollie Smith, KITA) – piano, and Rick Cranson (Little Bushman, KITA) – drums.

Recorded live on vintage equipment, Four Walls has a nostalgic feel. It is also one sexy sounding, fresh and dynamic track with a definite Peggy Lee vibe going on.

Lady Larisa has a sultry sound which wraps around you like a velvet blanket. Warm and inviting. I look forward to hearing the full album Honeychild upon release.

Rating: ( 5 / 5 )
