Samantha Jane - Single Review: Alaska

27 Nov 2020 // A review by IslaMusic

After years of "scribbling lyrics and humming melodies", Samantha Heart is ready to "call herself a musician". She's taken on this new identity with the goal of staying honest, especially when it's difficult. Samantha "doesn't want to be a polished pop star". She wants to muse on life through "silvery melodies and authentic lyrics".

Heart has hit the ground running with the catchy and whimsical Alaska. The track begins by exploring the desire for change. Samantha discusses the want to move away, cut her hair and be "known by somebody new". It's a sentiment we can all connect with.

Alaska begins mellow and pensive, before dropping into a groovy second section. The introduction of a kit and second guitar lines gives Alaska development. The production comes alive with ringing guitars in the second chorus.

Samantha Heart showcases her ability as both a lyricist and musician with a charming first release. I look forward to following her musical journey as she develops as an artist.

Rating: ( 4 / 5 )

I was dubious at the thought of reviewing a Christmas album. It’s not often that modern holiday tracks dodge the danger of cheesy cheer and forced rhyme.
