VÏKÆ - Single Review: Angry Girl
Auckland based songwriter and vocalist VïKÆ was originally born in Ukraine, and post-Chernobyl sought refuge here in New Zealand. She has an interesting backstory and brings forth her unique life experience to give a voice to important themes surrounding mental health, growth and expression. For a newly evolving artist, she is a breadth of new space and air for pop music. VïKÆ brings forth her talent, fascination for creativity, and ignitable energy. Having been classically trained as an opera singer, VïKÆ has the ability to shift in genre, and provoke emotive and captivating concepts in her music.
Angry Girl is VïKÆ’s latest single. It’s a thought-enhancing and melodious song, showcasing one of humankind’s strongest emotions with attitude. The sound is energy-filled, rich in beat with jumpy, arcade-styled layers. Here we see confident vocals coupled with skilled production. You feel a bit of Sia, and perhaps a bit of Taylor Swift influence, yet there’s something very original about the mastering of the song. Her energy is well-showcased in Angry Girl’s music video.
Lyrically, the song talks about a girl who throws shade and envy, is cynical, powered by hate, and repeats her patterns in society. Driven by greed and a real Judas to herself, Angry Girl depicts a character you don’t want to mess with, but also perhaps a fragment of ourselves when anger is a constant. It’s a character and a feeling that walks among us, presenting itself here in her raw form. VïKÆ does well to exploit the theme with brilliance and combustion. This is a performance you will want to see live!
