Iris Zhang - Single Review: Small Ache

14 Dec 2020 // A review by Corinne Rutherford
Iris Zhang is a lawyer by qualification, but a musician by heart. She is an incredibly talented young lady, not only academically but also in the musical arts. Iris has just released her first original single, Small Ache. A wonderfully lush song of warm tones and incredible harmonies.

From the onset of Small Ache, you are wrapped in graceful, poetic words backed by strong melodious vocals, the lyrics offering up a reflective contemplation of a past relationship.

Starting out as a pop song with RnB elements, this slowly progresses into a distinctive Jazz number complete with an evocative saxophone solo. Small Ache is an alluring mix of different genres.

Iris offers up a crystal clear sound of stunning honeyed vocals, partly attributed to performing in countless choirs, churches and competitions. She has developed a dedicated fan base online and her covers have received positive attention from several established artists. Most notable, Shawn Mendes.

Iris Zhang has a voice that touches your heart, combined with the talent to write lyrically. Small Ache is a beautiful song and I look forward to hearing her first EP which is planned for release in 2021.

Rating: ( 5 / 5 )

About Iris Zhang

Beginning with piano lessons at the age of 4, Iris is also a classically trained flautist, Chinese zither-ist, and self-taught guitarist. The confident child who warbled herself to sleep every night grew into a passionate vocalist, performing in countless choirs, churches, competitions, and, more recently, YouTube covers. Over the past few years, Iris has cultivated a dedicated fanbase online and her covers have received positive attention from several established artists (most notably, Shawn Mendes - in a reaction video which has since garnered over 24 million views).

Iris has also been crafting poetry and songs since her early teens, most of which she has kept squirreled away. But after 2 degrees, 3 majors, and 4 years of writing tax advice, she finally realised it was high time to pursue her true passion. These days, Iris writes about fairy tales, mental health, being Other, heartbreaks and small aches.

She plans to release her first EP in 2021.
