I recently attended a punk-weekender: two days of what seemed like seven minute sets, where there were really only fans and no bystanders and bands that moved from one song to the next as quickly as the flip of a pancake. It was fast and you felt each song melt into thin air almost before the air left the guitar strings. It’s this sort of energy I’ve been waiting to dial back into, and Cherry Blind hit the spot.
With their self-titled new single, Cherry Blind bring a dose of slightly sludgy, pop punk that threatens to be incredibly popular with its catchy lyrics and drums that bounce around like they are being played through an open window. The production is mint.
Cherry Blind are a three-piece, variously described as loud punk rock, angsty punk and post punk. So punk, then. I find it’s more about what it makes you feel: it’s makes me feel like dancing about till I fall over. It’s cathartic, frenetic yet poised in its construction. I love the turn halfway through, where the pace drops and the vocals hit new heights into a more experimental range.
Perhaps a slightly latent point in age of streaming but the art work for Cherry Blind’s self-titled new single, is awesome. It’s a combination of colours that almost sting the eyes and depicts graffiti inspired fierce fruit, it stands out for comic-quality and originality.
Cherry Blind is a three-piece angsty punk band that was started by three teenagers in their parents living room. Logan Anderson is the lead singer and bassist, with Mark Tohovoka playing the drums and Sabastian Munro playing the guitar. All three members attended the same high school and began jamming together in an old garage in 2015.
After winning Smokefree Rockquest in 2017 they released their first single House of Flies, which went on to place 1150th in The Rock 1500. The song also debuted at No.1 on the iTunes Rock charts in NZ. Cherry Blind has been heavily supported by The Rock FM, and regularly featured on the station.
Cherry Blind has since released two more singles Black Sheep and more recently Papercut. Papercut is on The Rock's daily rotation and also featured at #11 on the Radio scope rock charts.
