Big Scout - Single Review: Mr. Slice
Straight Outta Blenheim, noisy angular post-punk band Big Scout have released an addictive new song, Mr. Slice.
The three-piece of Jim Tannock, Matthew Hellriegel, and Gregg Slatter are a tight unit musically, especially the drums and bass rhythm section. The band says Mr. Slice was written about a "top shelf dickhead", and a handbag snatching nuisance whose first name may have been Jim.
It’s an addictive song which is easily put on repeat, there are elements of fun with the anger at someone who has, in the writer’s eyes, been so annoying it was worth writing a song about him. However, there are strong elements of humour in the song, from the opening wall of guitar fuzz and an ‘Oi!’ as the song starts, to the singer making a fart noise as the song goes into the middle 8 bars.
Full disclosure I listened Mr. Slice 10 to 20 times in a row as I wrote this, and heard new parts on each listen. It was recorded in Blenheim at Secret Handshake in Nelson by Trevor Montgomery.
Structurally it is pop punk perfection: short intro, then two snappy verses before hitting the chorus of: "dickhead, you’re a dickhead, (growl), dickhead, top shelf dickhead (growl)" at 33 seconds in, before snapping straight back to another verse.
It’s clever both musically and lyrically, and I can imagine a room full of people singing along with the chorus. Punters in some NZ cities will have the opportunity to sing-a-long with Big Scout as they’re set to tour parts of the country this year.

Drawing upon influences from the three fellas distinct (and distant) musical upbringings, the sound sits somewhere amongst the stylings of Pissed Jeans, Bruce Springsteen and The 3Ds.
