Reuben Hudson - Single Review: Baby Bedside

23 May 2021 // A review by darryl baser

There are many things which can derail a musician’s career, although Reuben Hudson’s reasoning may be a little less common than most.

He had kidney transplant surgery in 2020.

However, the Auckland based indie-folk musician is back in business, and if the video to his new song Baby Bedside can be believed, he’s back on the skateboard and frolicking through grassy fields with his dog.

Prior to surgery he began crafting a body of work, including this gently and charming song which he has written, performed, recorded, and mixed himself. By all accounts he’s done a fantastic job, the production is beautiful, and the effects he’s layered on his vocal really suit the feel of the song. Although he did 95% of the mahi himself in his bedroom, the recording was mastered by Jin Song.

As a song, Baby Bedside is a gentle lilting 6/8 littered with catchy hooks and charming instrumentation, and this gem amongst the lyrics; “Oh babe I do want you just as the moon does the sea, gravity pulls like the tide…”. With stunning imagery, as a songwriter, I wouldn’t be surprised if this phrase was the song’s beginning.

The single is available, to hear and purchase from May 21st, and it has an excellent music video to accompany it on YouTube directed by Toi Rankin, filmed and edited by Peter Furlong, which is available for public viewing on Monday May 24th.

Nika - Single Review: Saviour Complex
03 Nov 2022 // by darryl baser
A song with an interesting title will always grab my attention, and the idea of people with a saviour complex has always fascinated me, so when the new song by Nika called Saviour Complex was offered to me to review I almost somersaulted. The song opens with a gently and alluring piano melody before Nika’s voice kicks in and from the first notes some vocal training is obvious.

VÏKÆ - EP Review: Love Games

Veronika Bell, known to music fans as Vikae, has been composing and producing music for a good few years, and is gaining some crossover traction between the dance and pop worlds. While she writes many of her tunes on a piano, and can perform them beautifully with piano and her impressive voice, it is the dance-styled pop versions of her tune which have been garnering her acclaim.
