Lisa Crawley - EP Review: Looking For Love - (In A Major)

22 Jul 2021 // A review by madeleinehoward
Indie pop singer-songwriter Lisa Crawley launches her new EP Looking For Love - In "A Major" today.

Enjoying success with the release of multiple albums, EP’s and singles, the four time APRA Silver Scroll nominee has also been selected twice for the prestigious Banff Centre Songwriters residency. More recently, Crawley has starred in the Tony Award winning musical Once as the iconic lead role ‘Girl.’

A move to Los Angeles at the beginning of 2020 has seen Crawley collaborate with Grammy nominated producer Rob Kleiner, who has worked alongside international artists such as SIA, David Guetta and The Weeknd, to name a few. The result is a collection of nostalgic, catchy pop songs, produced to the highest standard on this five track EP.

The EP begins with the title track, in which Crawley's pure, clear vocals are complimented perfectly by a bass heavy electric guitar, with the occasional addition of percussion, twinkling xylophones and piano. A quirky, light hearted introduction to this EP, Looking For Love is cheery and hopeful in its message of searching for ‘the one,’ despite the many obstacles that one may face along the way. The track is a personal highlight for me and a strong introduction to this latest collection of songs from Crawley.

Next up is lead single The Right Way, an ode to over thinkers and awkwardness, with heavy influences from early 2010 pop music. Things slow down with third track Lazy Love, a slow burning ballad which sounds like something out of Grease. It's old school, retro feel makes for easy listening. The fourth track Clear History is an edgier track, with grungy guitar and choruses full of harmonies, reminiscent of Lily Allen. My Time is a subtle, triumphant conclusion to the EP, a song about finally putting yourself first.

Production is crisp and minimalistic. Instrumentation is kept simple, allowing Crawley’s skill in lyric writing to really shine through. As a fan of Crawley’s since her debut album Everything That I Have Seen, it's wonderful to see how far Crawley has come since her earlier works. Looking For Love is a reminder that less really is more when it comes to simple pop music done well.
