Jason Parker - Single Review: This Is My Year

26 Sep 2021 // A review by Danica Bryant

On his latest release This Is My Year, pop newcomer Jason Parker calls back to the cheerful anthems of early 2000s pop, firmly announcing 2021 as his moment to be “happy again”. After appearances with TVNZ’s Popstars and Wellington’s Peachy Keen festival, Parker now sets out to shape his own brave, colourful identity in Aotearoa’s bustling music landscape.

It’s hard to deny the bursting chorus of This Is My Year, with its feel-good lyricism and catchy claps. Although sparse at times, the song’s production works to allow its clean pop melodies their deserved time in the spotlight. Quirky bass and guitar riffs throughout create an uplifting, buoyant feeling, and the bouncy bridge winds down to simple keys that show a clear influence from artists such as Lily Allen and Kelly Clarkson. Parker’s vocals are always especially strong. He is an emotive performer, his smile somehow beaming through even when you can’t physically see him, and selling the simple but effective lyrics. Outside of the song itself, the Mario-style imagery on its lyric video and Spotify canvas deserve special appreciation, creating a goofy and fun visual association that furthers the positive energy of This Is My Year

For this proud “Virgo sun with a popstar rising”, This Is My Year is an energetic celebration which works best as a mission statement for Parker’s musical career. “Saying no to fear” and “taking chances again”, Jason Parker has made an excellent first step into artistry, by simply announcing himself as someone you’ll definitely want to cheer for.

About Jason Parker

Say hello to Jason Parker. A singer/songwriter from Wellington, New Zealand.
Jason Parker has been in a committed relationship with Pop music ever since he realised the TV remote doubles as a microphone. Inspired by female powerhouse vocalists like Christina Aguilera and Kelly Clarkson, his catchy hooks and one-of-a-kind vocals will have you crying and dancing all while singing at the top of your lungs.

Jason Parker's debut single You Rescued Me can be described as a cinematic, pop anthem that highlights his honest songwriting and vocal talents. After appearing on Popstars NZ and winning the hearts of the NZ public, Jason began studio sessions with producer Alvyn Tan to create the magic that is ‘You Rescued Me’. Kimbra was quoted in Stuff as saying “[Jason has] charisma, sense of self-confidence and voice that can really move a room.” Writing music in secret for years, this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity gave Jason the confidence to take his songs out of his notepad and into the world.

Marking their sixth album in six years, High Horse is the latest impressive release from Christchurch powerhouses Adam Hattaway and the Haunters. Unlike the boisterous rock and roll ventures which precede it, High Horse is an intimate, eerie project made with a small group of collaborators.

Claudia Robin Gunn - Album Review: Little Wild Learning
16 Sep 2024 // by Danica Bryant
The art of writing children's music is deceptively harder than people might expect. The songs are easy to listen to and lyrically simple, but they must incorporate educational vocabulary, introduce new ideas about life, and maintain a catchiness that gives young listeners a fun experience, rather than one that could be overwhelming.

21 Apr 2024 // by Danica Bryant
Tamaki Makaurau based husband & wife duo Charles & Emily Looker, otherwise known as Aro, escape genre boundaries on their fourth body of work, He Rakau, He Ngarara. Aro's waiata draw from country and folk, jazz, and shades of haka, making for a collection that often purposefully creates sonic whiplash in a stunning exploration of sound and kaitiakitanga and manaakitanga.
