Neutrikk - EP Review: E-P 2

08 Dec 2021 // A review by Corinne Rutherford

Auckland duo Neutrikk have just released their second EP. Cleverly called E-P 2, I must admit to spending longer than I should have trying to find the name of the EP in the Bio. This is an original collection of 5 alternative lo-fi EDM tracks delivering honest engaging lyrics, strong expressive vocals and tight composition which create a refreshing yet warm musical soundscape. Neutrikk are Nikki Ngatai and Lee Catlin, their “electronic beats saturated with harmonies & confronting, contemplative narrative” are written and recorded on beautiful Waiheke Island.

Born out of a lockdown, they were able to have the time to experiment which allowed them to develop their music with a different approach. E-P 2 is the result of this.

E-P 2 offers up a unique disjointed sound complemented with rich bass interspersed with distortion and combined cleanly. The mixing is brilliant you are given the electronic experience. At a slower pace with all the goodness of bass. Nikki Ngatai is a strong vocalist, as my colleague once wrote she has a “wonderfully gentle vibrato” this offers a unique and harmonious sound which blends in seamlessly with the electronic mix.

My personal two standout tracks from this EP are What Do You Do? a track infused in delicious distortion and bass and Heal Her a primal sounding finale to an extraordinary and sublime EP.

Nikki and Lee have developed a remarkable sound of their own which transcends multiple genres, taking the listener on a journey somewhere between the dance floor and the chill out zone. I thoroughly recommend having a listen.

Rating: ( 5 / 5 )

About Neutrikk

Born on Waiheke Island via Leeds & Bradford through a mutual belief that a tune is a tune no matter what the style, Nikki & Lee led each other down sonic paths they wouldn't normally travel. The result is Neutrikk and their beautifully crafted debut EP.
