Hans. - EP Review: Kimyuntak

20 Apr 2022 // A review by Ben Ruegg

Hailing from Auckland, New Zealand, Hans. is an exciting Korean artist that has been dubbed by VICE Magazine as "One of the rising stars of New Zealand Hip Hop." as well as being lauded by beats 1 DJ Zane Lowe as one of his favourite NZ rappers.

With his breakthrough single Froyo featuring Clairo amassing over 10 million streams, his consistency in releases has allowed him to become a staple in NZ Hip-Hop all the while supporting international acts such as Billie Eilish and Rejjie Snow and representing New Zealand at SXSW.

On the new EP Kimyuntak, Hans. finds himself exploring different sonic landscapes like on the opening track Nelele which has an almost euro techno vibe to it.

On the single Be Grateful, the rap almost feels like it is summoning a Beez In The Trap vibe from Nicki Minaj. The vocal delivery is deadpan, yet I know this was by way of creative choice as part of this image and the album.

The track Cappin was definitely the stand out for me. I felt that overall the sound did not resonate with me. However, this is just my opinion and I would encourage you to check it out for yourself as there is definitely an image and sound package here that will resonate with some.

With a couple of interludes thrown in, this is an EP that has a vision and follows through with it.

Rating: ( 3 / 5 )
