Will McClean - Single Review: Ego Prison

28 Apr 2022 // A review by Ben Ruegg

I'm getting to hear more Will McClean... yes please!

Will McClean is a Hip-Hop artist from Wellington, New Zealand. Will McClean has been gaining traction around the country over the past two years as vocalist/rapper from Wellington band, The Zooks.

McClean’s rap style is mellow but precise; taking time to say what matters, and by taking a look through his discography you’ll find a blend of conscious lyrics over smooth instrumentals; mixed in with the occasional heavier hip-hop track.

There is something refreshing about Will's sound.  It again is on show here on his new track. Not only is it full of that NZ chill Hip-Hop vibe, but his new track Ego Prison also continues to provide a wonderful laid back feel with its smooth sax soloing throughout while still providing space for everything else. The bass line just oozes personality, as do McClean's verses.

Featuring Carl Connor, this is a great track that continues to build up what Will is capable of.

Rating: ( 4 / 5 )

About Will McClean

Will McClean is a Wellington-based hip-hop artist known for his introspective lyrics and evocative melodies, combined with the dynamic energy of his 6-piece live band.

Whilst being the ultimate hype man, Will’s main priority, however, is clarifying who, exactly, he represents. The short answer is his family and his friends.

Will’s late father was the frontman for a band that formed in the 80’s called The Vacuum and is a key drive of McClean’s inspiration to continue his musical legacy. Having also been surrounded by music in his home for the majority of his life, Will says “with Mum blasting artists like Bob Marley, Lauryn Hill and Fat Freddy’s Drop all day, everyday; I used to be rapping and singing along and it ultimately made me gravitate to creating some flows for myself.” His ever expanding musical inspirations consist of the likes of Loyle Carner, Tom Scott and J. Cole to name a few.
