DiCE_NZ is a DJ and Producer from Auckland, Aotearoa. DiCE has worked with epochal bands such as Fat Freddy’s Drop and The Black Seeds, with his own collection of Disco, Funk, and Jazz edits to his name. Originally known for edits of NZ heritage music, Dave Ti and his crew have since reached a greater audience, accompanying the ripening of global sound in the local circuit. He has received airplay on BBC’s Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show, MiSoul radio, and an array of NZ radio stations and broadcasting channels such as GeorgeFM and NZTV’s The Project. He’s released his music on TooSlowToDisco, Discoholics Anonymous, Slightly Transformed, Electric Friends Music & Audaz Records.
After relocating to NZ in 2005, he has been a regular appearance in new local music scenes. He takes influence from UK Rave, Hardcore, Breakbeat and Drum and Bass, with live experience in spinning Disco, Funk and Jazz edits which you can hear shaping his new EP The Situation. The original tracks of his feature Dave Ti himself, DJ Christiaan Ercolano, Percussionist Matt Sawyer, DJ Duncan Funk, and Keith Filo. The live performing acts also get support from vocalists and percussion, and pride themselves on the building of their tracks using analogue synthesisers, drum machines and old school samples.
The Situation opens up with track one; Believe Me, the original mix featuring Brittany Kate. This is a crafty number with smooth keys, a sound infused with soul and a regular bass beat. It’s instantly moody, chill, and classy. Don’t Ya Know is the second original track on the album with a more funk laden groove, tempo picks up and we hear horns; if your shoulders aren't shimmying at this point then good music just isn’t for you, I guess!?
The Situation Feat. House of Downtown is another original to embrace. It’s slowed back down to a mellow metre, with a faded bluesy guitar lifting the track with an ethereal feel. The melody in this track is relaxing and sonorous, a perfect transition between songs where different instruments do the work. Believe Me (Feat. Brittany Kate) has an Andy Buchan Sax Remix which comes in at number four. This remix is jazzier, faster and emphasises the drums and horns in tandem. Don’t Ya Know / Fingerman Rework is a killer tune to end the EP. It’s got a clapping bassline, synthy lasers that help build up the noise and atmosphere of the track, with beautiful syncopation added in between grooves. It’s the busy track of the album, sonically mixing many dance styles to accommodate for a lively audience.
The artist's progression is smooth, tasteful, and delicate yet awakening. It’s an EP capable of taking you well into the night! DiCE_NZ has created fine wine of his music, now pouring with genres, rhythms, and instruments, with rule-breaking mixes that show the craftiness of his production.
