Self-proclaimed “Hillbillies in Hiluxes” Big Scout from Blenheim (Jim Tannock, Mathew Hellriegel and Gregg Slatter) are an original 3-piece band full of loud fast paced energy that may (or may not) be post punk (not to be pigeonholed). The band's third single off their up-and-coming debut album Council Sport is How Lovely, an assault on your senses in the best way.
These guys are raising a middle finger to mediocrity with dirty fuzzy guitar and a few choice swear words thrown in. This is small town New Zealand making a lot of noise.
What came to mind as I listened to How Lovely was Big Scout sounds vaguely like the Sex Pistols. A healthy dose of Johnny Rotten never hurts. This is the last offering from the band before their album is released, it has attitude and balls delivering a great big smack around the head of in-your-face vocals accompanied by an attack on your earholes of grungy guitar.
There are no fluffy lyrics.
Chaotic? You bet. In the best way.
How Lovely is sarcastically ironic from a more “chemically influenced time in backwoods Wellington thinking about where it all went wrong” Reminiscent of back catalogues from Flying Nun.
How Lovely, is unapologetic, loud, and well produced. If the rest of the album follows suit, they will be onto a banger.
Big Scout are touring parts of New Zealand soon following the album release.
Big Scout are a spirited 3-piece guitar band from Blenheim.
Drawing upon influences from the three fellas distinct (and distant) musical upbringings, the sound sits somewhere amongst the stylings of Pissed Jeans, Bruce Springsteen and The 3Ds. Big Scout recorded last year with Brian Feary from Melted Icecream and has released the single Flung and the B-Side Everything Must Go along with a self directed video.
