Coridian - Single Review: Rakshasa
Auckland-based 4-piece Coridian return in full force with their second single Rakshasa off their much anticipated upcoming album HAVA, which is due early next year. A winter storm of progression and melancholy proving once again that one of the fastest rising Kiwi Rock acts can still push the boundaries of their sound whilst still dialling in plenty of that early 2000's nostalgia.
This is great conceptual writing. The struggle of fighting back against the symbolically depicted Rakshasa, a Hindu Sanskrit word that refers to an all-consuming malevolent demon. The listener is taken on a journey from start to finish with moments of desperation, anger and relief.
It's the attention to detail on this single that stands out. Every section of the track showcases different disciplines from each member of the band, this especially apparent with the excellent use of dynamics throughout the evolving bridge. With the highest production quality, a thoughtful song structure and interesting lyrical syncopation - it really is hard to fault.
The way that Coridian manage to keep bringing us all the elements of modern day rock and progressive metal, whilst still emoting feelings of a previous era is outstanding. Rakshasa is stirring reminder of what's to come with the upcoming release of HAVA.
