Brown-E - Single Review: Give Me Your Love

02 Oct 2022 // A review by Gaby Ivanov-Giraldo

Jenna Palmer, AKA Brown-E, is a self-managed and independent singer songwriter based in Auckland and Tauranga. Stepping on the scene at the right time, she’s got a single for the sweethearts! Give Me Your Love is Brown-E’s debut R&B single, which is produced by Ricky Paul Muzik.

Originating from Matakana Island and Samoa, Jenna’s ancestry brings individuality and history into what she writes. Her home had a lot of musical talent growing up, which she acknowledges to have a raw influence in her passion. Jenna recalls going to her dad’s gigs as young as eight; experiences that became the pillar memories in her journey through music. She recently told radio Waatea that watching videos of the band Blondie was the big inspiration behind the stage name Brown-E; a name that feels dedicated to the love of performance, uniqueness and femininity.

Give Me Your Love is warm with a delicate, open, and soulful influence. Lyrically, this song is about making a seemingly familiar connection, and getting lost in it. Day-dreamy, lush, and bubbly. Her gripping vocals are matched with a kicking rhythm, and silky guitar chords. The vocals are reminiscent of India Arie, or Joss Stone. Queens you would most likely die to see live. From Aotearoa, you’d most likely hear the likes of Ria Hall or Ladi6 if you wanted to compare style.

It’s a record made for loving, falling, connecting and all-that-gushy-stuff. The initial highs of love have such a place in music it’s not funny! Our thoughts are on a pedestal, emotions are turned up, and it’s basically all flowy waves and butterflies. Creating and imagining the playful scenes of love has to be done well, or you might as well have lost your audience. If you’re in the mood for happy endings, let this song be your little guide. She’s written it sassy, and she’s come in hot for the first track!

About Brown-E

Soulful lyrics delivered by deep low end tones and buttery layers of harmonies, her voice is like “honey on a cold day”.

Inspired by love and the richness of life’s experiences, Brown-E paints poignant images that portray her overflow of wisdom. Lush vocals infused with raw emotion, arranged in delicious rhythmic flow, it is hard not to feel moved by her art.

Brown-E’s music reflect the musings of her heart and soul, presented with a vocal range that explores all of the notes in between that of a tenor and mezzo-soprano. She entwines these ingredients, into beats that have a particularly old school 90’s back bone.
