Leejun - Album Review: Leejunardo Da Vinci

03 Oct 2022 // A review by Ben Ruegg

Leejun is a Hip-Hop R&B Artist who lives and works in the 03 Christchurch, New Zealand. His complex lyricism and smooth delivery alongside his soulful singing voice reflect the amount of time he's dedicated to working on his craft. His unique style and the strong messages within his music are able to reach and connect with the listener in a way where they can relate to every song.

This album sets you up with some fine music during the opening track Welcome. But by the second track IDK you can tell that Leejun means business. His delivery, cadence and lyrical work demands attention. A few times there in this track I felt like in some songs Dr Dre rapping was making its way through, namely from the track Forgot About Dre. And after the first real full track, you won’t be forgetting about Leejun.

Yet, with full selection of tracks here, comparing him with any one hip-hop influence would be unfair. There is a lot on offer. For example, juxtaposing the 2nd track, number 3 really slows it down, brings auto tune at times for effect, something that makes appearances on a few tracks.

By track 7, there’s a more funkier vibe happening. The different styles of hip-hip allow Leejun production and love for hip hop shine. Each and every track sounds professional with care given to the recording of vocal, taking advantage of double tracking parts to help bring certain phrases to the forefront. But also, in the beats and music themselves. On the track Dragons Breath II, there is an eastern vibe that is revisited and explored slightly differently in Dragons Breath 2.5. Or, the almost drill sounding beats that aren’t drill in my mind. They miss having that little skip in the snare at the end of the second bar. What Leejun does is take a feeling or idea and paints his version of it ignoring the rules that may apply to that sub-genre of hip hop.

There are also plenty of guests artists to help brings these tracks to life. One of the stand out tracks for me was Same O (featuring Bhozy). There was something that almost felt like a mix of east coast and west coast American hip hop that appealed to me here.

Overall, if you appreciate hip hop and real talent, this is one you must check out.
