Roonie - Single Review: The Way It Should Be

13 Oct 2022 // A review by madeleinehoward

Pop artist Roonie releases her new single The Way It Should Be today, Friday 14th October 2022.

Taupo raised, Christchurch based Roonie is Michaela Pointon, who burst onto the scene in 2020 with the release of her debut single My Heart. The hook filled, uplifting track flew into the Official NZ Hot Singles Charts at number 15. The following singles Alibi, released in April this year and Something Bout You in June, continued to showcase Roonie’s developing pop sound.

The third single from her upcoming debut EP Loveless, The Way It Should Be is a change from the shimmery synth pop sound Roonie has established, with the track being an intimate pop ballad.

The Way It Should Be is soft and vulnerable, with twinkling synths and keys accompanying Roonie’ sweet vocals. Production is simple and allows Roonie’s vocals to be showcased beautifully. The track builds nicely with percussion coming in at the end of the first chorus. Fuller more atmospheric instrumentation pushes the track forward at the end of the second chorus, creating more interest. Just as the track builds in momentum, it comes to an end, all rather too quickly.

The Way That It Should Be is a far cry from Roonie’s previous catchy tracks, and perhaps I was expecting something similar from this single. Regardless, the track is a lovely addition to Roonie’s repertoire. The Way It Should Be is the final single to be released from Loveless, with the EP set for release on November 25th. I look forward to seeing the complete collection of tracks from this up-and-coming artist.

About Roonie

New Pop artist Roonie, previously known as Michaela Pointon, is making lead-way with her electrifying writing about loneliness and love. She moved to Auckland in 2019 where she is studying, writing new songs and building a name for herself in the music scene. While experiencing this huge year of growth in her music, Roonie also found herself deeply lost in heartbreak.

Her new single My Heart out out on June 19th 2020 is about self-discovery and learning to grow when you’re lost and alone. This song is electric with colour is strong yet vulnerably honest and self-reflective.
