New Zealand's answer to the alt-rock explosion that rocked the 90's has taken its modern form as Taranaki's System Exit, with their new release Avalon - giving a trifecta of a funky, spacey, and catchy EP.
System Exit has certainly discovered their signature; every track flows like water with a crisp mix and memorable riffs. Avalon boasts the kind of music you'd play with a group of friends out on a beach at sunset.
The EP starts
off with a fast-paced, funky track, Hi Man, which certainly scratches the indie itch we all crave. It's a feel-good way to ease yourself into the slower paces on the forthcoming tracks.
Next up is Dub Tea, which introduces the 'spaciness', with a track that, in its apex, feels like it's all around you. Dub Tea is a perfect example of the incredible mixing in this effort, every instrument gets its spotlight
without anyone being left behind.
Conclusively, we have psychedelic Confusion State, which achieves the trifecta mentioned earlier. While the song starts slow, it makes up for its short run time with easily the most powerful
and emotional guitar solo out of the three tracks; which makes it the perfect closer for this opus.
One of the only visible downsides with this EP is its length, I personally wish it to be longer, otherwise, your beach sunset is cut off at 12 minutes. This album definitely gets 4 stars for its creativity and clearly talented musicianship that bleeds out of every beat. I cannot wait to hear what else they have to offer.
System Exit are a 5-piece powerhouse based in Taranaki.
With a recent 3-track EP showcasing their psychedelic/rock/ska fusion sound, System Exit are road ready and looking to break into the national scene.
