WoLF - Single Review: Underachiever

17 Feb 2023 // A review by Gaby Ivanov-Giraldo

WoLF is a solo project (Aaron Hogg) with over 25 years' experience as a vocalist, guitarist and bassist. Having a lot of tour and show experience, WoLF is an accomplished artist with international acts and festivals under his belt. He’s one of those musicians that has taken us out of the sticky sounds of everyday radio, or Spotify’s top 40’s and placed his own marker down in the industry.

He sounds like a machine that’s used different parts of its own body to create sounds of tinny, synthy distortion; sounds rough but with his timing, addition of keys, bass, drumming and production… It's awesome! WoLF’s newest track Underachiever is like a solemn 90's train ride that reminds you of alt-rock bands like Blur or The Verve. However, it’s mixed with deeper, darker almost early Joy Division vocals that have a real quirk to them.

Electro-sludge has been a focus of his in the recent past, which I find such an interesting little adventure. I really enjoyed this artist's uniqueness, and sure as anything I hope he makes more songs like this!

About WoLF

WoLF is the solo project of Otautahi Christchurch, NZ musician Aaron Hogg.

With 25 years experience as a vocalist, guitarist & bassist for bands such as Pumpkinhead, Slim and Thunderwülf, Aaron has toured & played shows & festivals alongside an array of NZ and international acts.

Although WoLF began as a side project, documenting Aaron's exploration of music production and a new found love for synthesizers his genre-bending brand of electro-sludge quickly became his major musical focus. It is characterized by distorted slabs of his mainstay synth, the Korg MS20, underpinned by a heavy foundation of live bass & off-grid, raw drums.
