Slimivich - Single Review: Grind

08 Jun 2023 // A review by Peter K Malthus

Slim Jenkins and Morgan Galloway of Slimivich are no newcomers to the NZ heavy music scene, having both previously played with legendary NZ Metal outfit Tainted. However, if you're looking for Tainted's inimitable Death Metal style, you can do that here, because this is something quite different.

Ok, granted, it starts with a suitably grinding guitar riff, rumbling forth with chuggy drop-tuned goodness. A few seconds later, however, Slimivich's true intent is revealed. A grimy, bleak, venomous blending of Metal attitude and Hip-Hop style, lyrics cynically spat out almost punk-like, with industrial-type soundscapes and samples.

This is a grim take from a world-wearied perspective, a street poet holding up a cracked and darkened mirror to a world of people trapped in a soulless, grinding life. The soundtrack to this ode to urban woe is suitably brooding, and reflective of the mechanical heart of the concrete jungle, dark and jarring.

Like any good Hip-Hop-influenced project, it's also superbly danceable, and has potential to do well across multiple genres. As a live act, I bet that this powerhouse duo would go off like a ton of dynamite, and I'll be able to put that theory to the test soon. Slimivich will be touring in support of the release of Grind. Maybe I'll see you there.

About Slimivich

Slimivich is the eclectic new sonic expression of barely suppressed rage, from seasoned ?tautahi Christchurch heavy music journeymen “Slim” Jenkins and Mo Galloway of TAINTED infamy.

An entirely new direction for these veteran of the New Zealand heavy music scene, Slimivich doesn’t explode like previous metal releases, instead it radiates and crackles with all the allure of overloaded high voltage circuits, glowing and arcing in the dark. From the chilling omen of haunted whispers, to the relentless punishment of pounding drums, searing synth and grueling bass, Slimivich seeks to explore the varying textures of what should be considered “heavy” music.

With singles Desert Shimmer and the darker Hysteria grabbing new listeners by the throat; and having ambushed unsuspecting punk, rock metal and hip-hop fans in Otautahi Christchurch and Otepoti through 2022; Slimivich is now poised to assault an unsuspecting New Zealand on The Grind Tour through June and July 2023 in support of their punishing upcoming release Grind.

06 Oct 2024 // by Peter K Malthus
It's always a treat to get to go see a show at Christchurch's beautiful The Piano, and sit in its stunning auditorium. Unfortunately, I arrived slightly late due to some teenage hijinks on the home front, so I missed the start of Steffany Beck's set.
