I am a true ‘noob’ when it comes to the Lost Tribe Aotearoa, so I can assure you and the band that this will be as unbiased as possible. After hearing the first song, I think it is going to be hard to stay that way all the way through this review.
Lost Tribe Aotearoa are no strangers to the limelight, and this is definitely not their first dance. Having come to people’s attention in 2018, they have attracted a myriad of fans and have become a must see live extravaganza.
The EP starts off with the song Strange Things which begins with a very Romanesque beating of the drums as if two gladiators are about to engage in warfare. This song is very different to a majority of the EP, a more intense and concentrated use of the reggae beat to portray a very different approach to conveying a message.
Lost Generation has to be one of my favourite songs on this LP. Not only does it have a hip swinging beat coming strong out of the reggae history book, but it also has a very strong message regarding very cultural matters here in Aotearoa. The upbeat moment that gathers momentum near the end of the song is a cheeky surprise, it is akin to ordering a burger and chips and seeing your plate overloaded with chips, a welcomed surprise.
LTA bring a very flavoursome vibe to their music which has its own instinctive gravitational pull, call it the definitive sound of the Aotearoa summer, or just really good luck. Reflections, the fourth song, is such an easy listening song, I found myself becoming semi hypnotic listening to it and forgetting where I was and what I was doing, which made me very happy.
It is no secret that I really liked this EP, the only shame being that there music stopped way too soon for my liking. No doubt this just means Lost Tribe Aotearoa are just teasing me, much like Chaka Demus & Pliers did in the 1990’s. Looking forward to seeing this band in action and anything new in the near future.
