Tone6 are a vocal group from Auckland, consisting of Kirita Leavasa , Selevasio Tu'ima, Peachez Vetenibua, Seletute Tu'ima, Viliami Tupa'i and Shaelyn Togafiti , who began working together when attending Saintzup Performing Arts School. The collective experience and ability of these singers belies their youth, and while Close Your Eyes is just their second release, it's a powerful and assured musical statement.
Close Your Eyes uses a sensible format of alternating versus between individual singers with a full ensemble approach in the chorus sections. It's a ‘standard’ approach in Gospel/RnB of course, and only worth noting here in that it's the ideal way to highlight the technical level of the singing that we are listening to, which is of the highest calibre. The solo vocal work and ensemble passages are delivered to an extremely high standard. Not to harp on this, but a trap for the inexperienced in this genre is to overdo the technique to the expense of the song, and Tone6 show themselves to be far too experienced and musically aware to make mistakes like that. It's mature, skilled, and above all ,musical singing all the way. It's terrific work.
Add to this an instrumental backing of players who understand how to phrase, use dynamics and above all how to support a vocal performance, and the overall effect is powerful indeed. The assurance of the vocal delivery is matched with the same level of assurance in the backing. It wouldn't be a surprise at all if it was a live recording- in any case, the whole ensemble in this recording is working together and there is certainly a feeling that the whole is more than just the sum of the parts.
Feagaigafou Tupa’i ,who gained prominence as one half of Adeaze, has crafted the right kind of song to show what Tone6 are capable of. It's the work of an experienced and skilled professional- as you could expect- and is the kind of song that allows the singers to show technique and skill in a musical fashion. It's a piece that can't help but bring out a singers ‘A’ game.
Close Your Eyes is a powerful, musical statement. Vocal skill and nuance are cleverly set with intelligent songwriting and sensitive instrumental backing to great effect. It's work of the highest quality.
