The EP opens on Patient a pop-rock ballad that won’t leave you waiting to hear Wednesday’s Girlfriend’s signature style. Pretend follows Patient, and it is fitting to see why. The melodies are infectious, the paired back instrumentation for the guitar solos balance their wall of sound, and the backing vocals are beautifully haunting.
The title track Cards comes at the halfway point of the EP, and unlike the first two songs, starts off more mellow and slow. But not for long! The catchy melody comes in with the punchy bassline, a perfect song to play at the height of a good night, you mustn’t keep these cards too close to your heart.
The final two songs showcase the drums and bass perfectly. Story opens on a punchy bass line, and Forever gives the drummer an opportunity to shine. A perfect song to end on, we are left with the notion that “if it was meant forever, then it’ll be forever.”
Ultimately, this is a fantastic debut for Wednesday’s Girlfriend, and they are the ones to watch in the Auckland band scene. Each different song showcases a different part of the band, and it is the perfect EP to play throughout a carefree summer’s night.
