Beacon Bloom - Single Review: Fallen Flower

19 Jul 2023 // A review by Peter K Malthus

Fallen Flower is a recent collaboration between New Zealand's Beacon Bloom and L.A.-based electronic producer Tim Enso. Beacon Bloom is a melodic house act well on their way to achieving more and more massive things, with well over 2.5 million streams across various platforms. Enso has more of a preference for muddying the waters between progressive and melodic house, as he continues on his mission to bring "euphoria-drenched melodies to the global stage".

Going into this review, I had dinner with my beloved sister. She is a big fan of house, and knows considerably more about it than me, so I played it to her. "Oooh yeah, I like this", she said. "This is a really nice chill vibe. This is the kind of song that gets played at around 4am, when people are just starting to maybe think about bed, and about taking someone with you. This is sexy. The lyrics are really good, they aren't cheesy, often when house tries to be sexy the lyrics can come off as cheesy, but not this, this is really good. I like the lush layers of synths, there's a lot of gorgeous stuff going on, here. It sounds great overall. This is totally my jam, this kind of thing". Which was brilliant, because I seriously doubt that I could have said it any better.

This is a song designed to enchant and uplift. The production is suitably huge, and slick, and luscious. I had it on repeat on my 30 minute drive to work this morning, and it was a superb start to the day. It's sultry, it's smooth, and it's beautiful.

About Beacon Bloom

Beacon Bloom is the musical outlet of New Zealand native Ryan Ferris.

Ryan has spent the last 5 years in 22 countries as a musical nomad, following the sun, writing and performing in the opposite seasons of Australasia and Europe.

Midnights in Berlin, hazy sunburn in Mallorca and Lisbon, the effervescent hum of Prague and Sydney and the sleepy stillness of hometown Christchurch have all collided and culminated in his latest body of work - a bedrock of groove and punchy bass; layered and soaring vocals cresting over wavey analog synths. Electronica carved from pop, chillwave, space disco, neo soul and funk.

Narcotic Tonsils - Album Review: You'll Get What You're Given
18 Dec 2024 // by Peter K Malthus
Now, I'm just going to get this out of the way right at the start: I know these guys, their guitarist Troy is a really good mate of mine, and I used to share a house with their frontman/bassist Andy - in fact, when he first started talking about a new band he wanted to put together, back in 2019. Two years later, Narcotic Tonsils erupted into being, and swiftly became my favourite Christchurch band (apart from the ones I'm in myself, obviously).

Gig Review: Otautahi Smoke BBQ Fest @ Hagley Park, Christchurch - 14/12/2024
16 Dec 2024 // by Peter K Malthus
I had a fair amount of trepidation about heading along to Otautahi Smoke BBQ Festival, the temperature was forecast to be 31 degrees, and I'm one of those folk who, as Billy Connolly so eloquently put it, is "so white, I'm pale blue". Luckily, I found a nice shady spot with a great view of the stage, and easy access to the free water station, and with a nice cool breeze blowing through, I didn't have to worry about burning to a crisp.

Lavender - EP Review: Types Of Infatuation
29 Nov 2024 // by Peter K Malthus
Types Of Infatuation is the name and the theme of the debut EP from Tamaki Makaurau based Lavender, who has been songwriting and performing from a young age, and whose style has developed into a well-crafted blend of indie folk-pop and alt-rock. Lavender has performed at many high profile events over the past few years, and if this EP is anything to go by, looks well set to go on too much bigger things again.
