Sofia Machray - EP Review: Language Of Flowers

01 Aug 2023 // A review by Corinne Rutherford
Wellington based Sofia Machray has been described as an “eclectic master of indie singer-songwriter gone rouge,” her recently released debut EP Language Of Flowers consists of 6 ethereal indie dream-rock tracks which have been beautifully constructed.

Inspired by her love of flowers in particular the similarity in evolution between human nature from tiny seed to full bloom.

Sofia's enchanting airy vocals combine with atmospheric music to create an original sound with a lush moody vibe wrapping around heartfelt lyrics.

Between Now And Then immediately shows her impressive vocal range, effortlessly moving through low to highs. The second track on her EP Petals In The Rain, highlights the cohesive marriage between instrumentals and her vocal style.

Crumbs is the standout track for me with breathy highs, Machray's originality stands out in both lyrics and sound.

The sentiment behind Cuppa Tea is wonderfully beautiful and raw. The track changes in style towards the end, lifting into a powerful song belting out “I just want to be.”

Rounding off Language Of Flowers, Foundations and Forget Me Not are delivered with passion creating a stunning finale to a wonderfully interesting and unique EP.

Her finger picked sound on the guitar added to the engaging sound. Like a breath of fresh air. This is a stunning body of work that has a distinctive sound.

Co-produced by Robbie Pattinson and Sofia Machray. Recording engineer - Robbie Pattinson.

About Sofia Machray

Described by pop-culture magazine Sniffers as ‘captivating', Sofia Machray is an independent dream-rock singer-songwriter from the heart of the mountains in Arrowtown, New Zealand. Stretching out over moody rockers and soft-burning hooks Sofia delved into the realm of indie music from a young age as a self-taught guitarist from 6 years old. Drawing on timeless concepts and the vast landscapes that raised, she began to cultivate and express herself through the medium of songwriting. In 2018 she made the move to Wellington to study music at Massey University where she met her 4-piece support band.

Becoming a strong forerunner in New Zealand’s independent scene, Machray was quick to win the hearts of music lovers close to home and abroad. Touring Aotearoa off the back of her debut single Handstands in 2020, the song went on to chart number 1 on various independent radio stations and led to her sharing stages with indie icons such as Palace, Wax Mustang, Dolphin Friendly, Ha The Unclear, and Racing.

2023 saw the release of Machray's dreamy debut record Language Of Flowers which attracted solid attention and support from both international/local media earning its spot on the Student Radio Network chats with multiple tracks such as Petals In The Rain, Foundations, and Crumbs climbing to number 1.
